After receiving two big ships—BCGS Syed Nazrul and BCGS Tajuddin— recently from Italy, the Coast Guard is going to beef up its capacity by setting up four more full-fledged stations at Dobeki, Puspakathi, Nidrachokina and Ramgoti with extra manpower soon to prevent piracy and smuggling.
For this purpose, 148 posts, including four posts of Lieutenant Commander and eight posts of Lieutenant, would be created for the paramilitary force, sources in the Coast Guard disclosed. The home ministry has prepared a proposal in this connection and it would be placed before the next meeting of the secretaries’ committee on administrative improvement affairs to seek its approval, according to the sources.
The former senior secretary of the home ministry, Dr Mozammel Haque Khan, in his proposal, said they have already set up six more stations—Kutubdiya, Teknaf, Moheshkhali, Sandeep, Kokilmoni and Supati—to ensure security in the riverine areas.
“For the smooth functioning of the 10 stations of the force, 518 posts in different categories, including the 148 posts, will be created,” the proposal said.
Meanwhile, at least 518 posts of nine categories, including Commander, Lieutenant Commander and Lieutenant of the Coast Guard have been created to strengthen the capacity of the force with a view to preventing piracy and smuggling.
At present, there is a total of 1,835 posts, including one post of director general (DG), one deputy director general (DDG), five directors, three zonal commanders and 14 deputy directors, in the Coast Guard.
A high-ranking official of the Coast Guard told The Independent that the employees of the posts would be appointed to operate Coastal Patrol Vessels (CPVs) and Riverine Patrol Vessels (RPVs) and also work in the 10 stations on the coast. “We need more manpower, offshore patrol vessels and modern equipment to strengthen the force’s capacity,” he added. The official also said they are preparing proposals to purchase two helicopters and other important equipment to strengthen the capacity and to smoothly conduct operations of the force.
The role of the Coast Guard is to preserve the nation’s interests at sea, protect fisheries, prevent illegal immigration through the sea, control pollution, control piracy, prevent smuggling, trafficking of illegal arms, drugs and narcotics, carry out disaster relief, search and rescue operations, preserve forests, and conduct surveillance over the country’s sea areas.
