300,000 jobs to be created in tourism by 2018: Menon

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon yesterday said the government plans to create employments for 300,000 people in the tourism sector within 2018.

The minister said it while speaking at a workshop organised by the Aviation and Tourism Journalist Forum of Bangladesh (ATJFB) at a hotel capital.
The minister said that rich culture and heritage give Bangladesh bright prospects to develop a variety of tourism products. “A variety in tourism will attract more foreign visitors. This will create job opportunity for many people.”
Menon asked the operators to diversify their products to tap into the sector's growing potential. 
He said that vigorous campaigns should be conducted at home and abroad to attract tourists from different countries including China, Thailand, Bhutan, India, Myanmar and Malaysia to Bangladesh.
“After the readymade garments (RMG), the tourism sector may be a profitable sector for the country”, Menon said adding that the government has taken many initiatives in the tourism sector to flourish it more.
“The government alone however cannot take this sector forward,” he said.
He urged private sector to invest in tourism industry as the government faces fund constraint in promoting tourism in home and abroad. 
Akhtaruz Zaman Khan Kabir, chief executive of Bangladesh Tourism Board, Aparup Chowdhury, Chairman of Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, Tawfiqe Uddin Ahmed, President of Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB) and Nadira Kiran, President of ATJFB, were also present on the occasion.
