A couple were burnt to death when a fire broke out in their house at Bolirhar Shajipara under Bakalia police station in the city early yesterday.
The victims were identified as Md Sayed Ahmed, 35, and Rina Akhter, 28.
At around 3:35am locals brought the couple to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in a critical condition. The on-duty doctor declared them dead. As the fire caught in mid-night they could not come out from room quickly, inhaling smoke the couple were died, said Md Hamid, Nayek of CMCH police outpost.
Fire Service and Civil Defense of Kalurghat sources said the fire was originated from a gas stove and three houses were gutted. On information four vehicles of two-units of Kalurghat Fire Service and Civil Defense rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after one-hour fanatic efforts and fire gutted valuables worth about Tk3 lakh, said Atish Chakma, senior officer of Kalurghat fire service and civil defense.
