DHAKA: At least 11 people were killed and 24 others injured in separate road accidents in four districts yesterday, reports BSS. In Gazipur, six people including women were killed and eight others sustained injuries as a Gazipur-bound ‘Laguna’ (human hauler) collided head-on with a bus at about 6:45 am at Itahata on Dhaka-Tangail Highway near Bhawal Badre Alam Government College, leaving all the six persons dead on the spot and eight others injured.
Four of the deceased were identified as Ukil Miah, son of M Ali, of Nalitabari in Sherpur district, Pran Nath Das, 38, son of Tulsi Das, his cousin Bakul Chandra Das, 35, son of Indrajit Das, residents of Gobindapur village under Salna Thana in Sunamganj district and Amena Begum, 45, wife of Babul Miah, of Bakshiganj in Jamalpur district.
The Laguna was carrying passengers from Chandra to Gazipur when it crashed against the bus coming from the opposite direction.
Talking to BSS, officer-in-charge (OC) of Joydebpur Police Station Khandker Rezaul Hasan said the accident occurred due to poor visibility as shallow to moderate fog covered the area.
The OC said police and locals rescued the victims and sent them to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College Hospital. Police also seized the killer bus, he added.
In another accident, two people were killed as a Natore-bound BRTC bus hit a van coming from the opposite side in Jolarbata area on the Natore-Bogra highway under Singra upazila in Natore district at about 12.15 pm.
The deceased were identified as Abu Kalam, 40, son of late Jonab Ali and Jaheda Begum, 70, wife of Tayef Uddin of Chouwgram village of the upazila, said Officer-in-Charge of Singra Thana Nasir Uddin Mondol. Two people were killed and 12 others injured in two separate road accidents in Kalihati and Bhuapur upazila in Tangail district today.
One of the deceased was identified as Abdul Halim, 35.In Thakurgaon, a muezzin of a mosque was killed as a tractor ran over him in Tikapara Sanua Bridge area in the district town this morning. The deceased was identified as Khorsed Ali, 45, muezzin of Tikapara Graveyard Mosque in the town. Sub-inspector of Sadar Thana Murtaza Rahman said the accident occurred when a tractor ran over Khorsed in the area at about 11 am, leaving him dead on the spot. A case was filed in this connection.
