talks with president over Election Commission

JP, LDP chalk out proposals

Staff Reporter

With the current Election Commission’s (EC’s) term set to end in February next year, political parties have almost finalised their proposals for the President’s consideration on forming the new commission. In this regard, Jatiya Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD), and Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Krishak Sramik Janata League would call on the President on December 20, 21 and 22 respectively.
Jatiya Party co-chairman GM Quader said they have not yet finalised the proposal for the President. But it would be completed on December 19 by holding a meeting the party chief and other senior leaders, he added. Quader, however, said his party had proposed the enactment of a law on the appointment of election commissioners on December 6. “We had also talked about a policy to determine the educational qualifications and other experiences of the commissioners,” he told The Independent yesterday.
He refused to say whether Jatiya Party would suggest any names for the formation of the search committee. “We would finalise all these matters at the party meeting on December 19,” he added.
LDP secretary general Dr Redwan Ahmed said a 10-member party delegation would meet the President at Bangabhaban on December 22.
“We would suggest some names of respected countrymen for the search committee. We would also suggest to the President five names for the new EC members,” he added. Krishak Sramik Janata League general secretary Habibur Rahman Talukdar said his party was yet to frame the proposals to be presented during the meeting with the President on December 22. “We would sit with our party leaders tonight (Saturday) to discuss and fix our proposals for the President,” he said. The other political parties would also meet the President with their proposals in phases. According to the EC, there are 40 registered political parties in the country at present.
