Police yesterday said they might again summon former SP Babul Akter for questioning in connection with the murder of his wife, Mahmuda Khanam Mitu (32).
Mitu was stabbed and shot dead near her home at GEC Circle in Chittagong by a group of motorcycle-borne assailants as she was escorting her son to a school bus on June 5. Following this, Babul had filed a murder case with Panchlish police station. The case was later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) for investigation.
Investigating officer (IO) Md Kamruzzaman disclosed that Babul Akter was called to the CMP headquarters for questioning on Thursday. The questioning lasted for around three hours.
“We talked with him about the incident and got some significant information. After verifying the information, we may question him again if necessary,” said Kamruzzaman, who is also the deputy commissioner of CMP.
The IO, however, refused to divulge details. “I can’t disclose the information for the sake of the investigation, which is developing every day. I will also talk with Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain in this regard,” he said, adding that he will file the charge-sheet soon after completing the investigation.
Police sources linked to the investigation divulged that Akter had admitted to police that he had known the prime accused, Kamrul Sikder Musa, and another suspect, Ethesamul Haque Bola, for many years. But he could not say why they had killed Mitu or who gave them the order to do so, the sources added.
Soon after the murder, police had arrested seven people for their alleged involvement in the murder. Later, two of the accused deposed in court that they had taken part in the killing led by Musa.
While police said Musa was absconding, his wife, Panna Akhter, alleged that law enforcers had picked him up.
On June 24, police had picked up Musa from his father-in-law’s house at Banashri. He was let off after 15 hours of questioning.
Then, on August 9, Akter had resigned from the police force. The home ministry had accepted his resignation, and issued a gazette notification in this regard on September 6.
