Evening of folk songs at Nat’l Museum tomorrow

Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) is organising an evening of Folk Songs by Kiran Chandra Roy and Chandana Roy Majumdar tomorrow at Sufia Kamal auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum in the capital’s Shahbagh. Kiran Chandra Roy is a versatile folk singer who specializes in Baul songs. He has received training in music from famous singer and music composer, Khondokar Nurul Alam. A prolific singer, Kiran Roy has recorded more than 30 solo albums. Many of these albums have set bestselling records. He is an outstanding category artist of Bangladesh Betar and BTV and a playback singer. He received the National Award in the best singer category for the film ‘Dukhai’ in the year 1997. He has performed all around the world in countries such as India, China, Japan, Singapore, Qatar, Nepal, Korea (South & North), England, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden and Canada. He has also performed in numerous charity programmes all over the world.
Chandana Roy Majumdar is one of the outstanding exponents of Folk Songs and Nazrul Geeti in Bangladesh. Chandana was trained by Lalon disciple, Moksed Ali Shai, who was from Lalon’s ‘akhra’ (den) in Kushtia. Another teacher was Khoda Buksh Shai, also from Kushtia. After securing a Diploma in Music from the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, she graduated to record more than 25 solo musical albums in Folk Music and Nazrul Geeti, most of which have been bestselling. Her song—‘Jao pakhi bolo tare’—had been a rage amongst the Bangla music lovers of Bangladesh and the world. After her marriage to renowned folk artiste Kiron Chandra Roy, she changed her name to Chandana Roy Majumder. She is currently imparting training in music at the prestigious Chayanaut in Dhaka. She is the proud winner of the National Award for being the Best Singer for the film ‘Monpura’ in the year-2009. She is an outstanding category artist of Bangladesh Betar and BTV and a playback singer. She has also given performances in India, China, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, Qatar, Uzbekistan etc.
