Captain Saif Hassan led the team from the front as Bangladesh Under-19 team began the mission of Under-19 Asia Cup with a four-wicket victory over Afghanistan yesterday at Uyanwatte Stadium, Matara, Sri Lanka.
Saif scored a patient 67 runs to steer the side reach 150 for six in 43.1 overs after Afghanistan were shot out for 146 in 48.3 overs.
The margin of the victory showed it was a tough chase from Bangladesh, but they were on course of a big win at one phase when Saif was in the crease. He was removed as the fourth batsman with the side five runs away from the victory. Bangladesh youths then tasted a sensational collapse, losing two more wickets in the space of four runs to make their job tougher. However the victory was certain once Saif laid the platform.
Saif sent the ball across the rope for 10 times in his 129 balls knock. Even though he made a cautious start in the chase of small total, his opening partner Mahidul Islam Ankon fell for 12, leaving the side 19 for one.
Afif Hossain, a known face in the Bangladesh cricket following his debut five-for in BPL, accompanied Saif to stall the charge of Afghans. They shared 42 runs for the second wicket after which Afif was dismissed for run-a-ball-19. Bangladesh then were left in troublesome situation when Habibur Rahman fell for naught to leave the side 68 for three.
Saif held together the innings and patiently drove the side with ably support from Rayan Rafsan Rahman. They took the side on the verge of the victory by sharing 74 runs. Rayan made 32 runs with the help of four fours and one six.
Zahir Khan was the most successful bowler for Afghanistan with two for 21.
Left arm medium fast bowler Quazi Anik derailed Afghans innings, claiming four for just 22 runs. Medium fast bowler Mukidul Islam played a perfect foil to him with three for 29.
Mukidul dealt a double blow, justifying his captain’s decision to send Afghanistan batting first. He got rid of two openers to leave the opponents for 28 for two.
Anik then joined the party, slicing the middle order of Afghans in a gem of fast bowling. Their combined effort, complemented by the other bowlers disciplined bowling helped Bangladesh restrict Afghans to a paltry total. Nasir Wahdat topscored for the side with 32 runs while Naveen-ul-Haque made an unbeaten 27.
