A Malaysian court yesterday jailed 10 Bangladeshi migrant workers along with 43 other foreign nationals detained for various criminal offences under the Immigration Act of the country.
The other jailed migrants include 28 Myanmarese, including a Rohingya, 11 Indonesians, two Vietnamese, a Cambodian and a Nepalese. Most of them were factory workers. Of the total, 48 pleaded guilty to the charges, according to local daily The Star.
Sessions judge Norhayati Mohd Yuno jailed them between one and six months from the date of their arrests in November.
They did not possess valid travel documents under Section 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 (Amendment 2002) and had overstayed under Section 15(4) of the same Act. Abdul Salam Mohamad, 21, a Rohingya, claimed trial to a charge of not possessing valid travel documents.
Two Vietnamese, charged with over-staying, and two Bangladeshis, alleged to not having valid travel documents, had their cases postponed for the court to get them interpreters. The court later fixed Jan 24 to mention their cases.
