The holy Eid-e-Miladunnabi, marking the birth and demise of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), was observed in the country and elsewhere on Tuesday with due reverence and religious fervour, reports BSS.
On this day in 570, the 12th of Rabiul Awal of the Hijri calendar, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) was born in Makkah of Saudi Arabia with divine blessings and messages of peace for mankind. He also passed away on the same day.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages greeting the countrymen and Muslims across the globe coinciding with the occasion and seeking eternal blessing for the people’s welfare alongside peace and harmony in the country and elsewhere in the world.
Besides, leader of the opposition in parliament Begum Raushan Ershad and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in separate messages also greeted the countrymen on the occasion.
The day was a public holiday. Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television and satellite television channels aired special programmes on the occasion.
Like previous years, different social, cultural, religious, spiritual and political organisations and different state-run organisations, including Islamic Foundation (IF), chalked out elaborate programmes including rally, milad mahfil, discussion and Qurankhwani marking the day.
Witnesses said thousands of devotees under the banner of different religious and socio-cultural organizations, carrying banners inscribed with ‘Kalema Taiyeba’, brought out processions and paraded thoroughfares in the city streets including Gulisthan, Paltan and Jatiya Press Club (JPC).
President Abdul Hamid hosted a milad mahfil at the Bangabhaban where government leaders, religious scholars and distinguished citizens attended in the afternoon.
Earlier, Religious Affairs Minister Principal Matiur Rahman on Tuesday inaugurated a 15-day programme coinciding with the Eid-e-Miladunnabi at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque under the auspices of Islamic Foundation.
The fortnight programmes include delivery of religious sermons, seminars, exhibition of Islamic calligraphy and posters based on life of the Prophet, book fair, Islamic cultural competition and recitation of poetries on him.
