Seminar with historian Prof Richard held at IUB
The Department of Social Sciences & Humanities of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) organised a seminar at its campus at Bashundhara in the capital on Monday, says a press release.
Prof Richard Eaton delivered an in-depth and research-based speech on ‘Reconsidering ‘Conversion to Islam’ in South Asian History’.
Prof Eaton pointed out that ‘Conversion to Islam’ in South Asia was an outcome of social liberation inspired by the liberating message preached by the ‘Sufi Sheikhs’; and it was therefore not a sudden process. Instead, it was a steady and unconscious process that took centuries after centuries to recognize it as ‘creative adaptation’ rather than ‘conversion’, Prof. Eaton emphasized.
Dr Mahbub Alam, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, IUB, delivered welcome address in the seminar while Prof M Omar Rahman, vice-chancellor of IUB, put his special remarks. Dr Talim Hossain, head of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities, IUB gave vote of thanks.
A lively and interactive question-answer session took place after the splendid speech given by Prof. Eaton.
