Speaker for educating people on parliamentary democracy
Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad and Chairperson of Executive Committee of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has said the people across the world should be educated on practicing parliamentary democracy.
"Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is working to spread democratic values among all levels of people," she told a meeting of CPA executive committee held in London on December 13, an official release said. Dr Shirin said, "We are observing a trend of young population, who are gradually losing their interest about politics, which is not good for democracy. Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is arranging road shows to create interest about democracy."
1 stabbed to death in Khulna
Miscreants stabbed to death a fish trader and injured his elder brother Tuesday night at Bangabasi intersection in Khulna city.
The deceased were identified as Zahid Hossain, 28, son of late Sabbir Hossain, resident of New Colony area of Khalishpur in the city.
Officer-in-Charge of Khalishpur Police Station Ameer Taymeer, said that criminals stabbed Zahid and his elder brother Zaved around 9.00pm Tuesday night while they were drinking tea at a roadside tea stall at Bangabasi area. Local people rushed them to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) where duty doctor declared Zahid dead. Quoting locals OC said, the duo has taken lease of a pond for farming fish a few months ago. They were threatened by some locals as they did not comply to give extortions.
Five receive ‘Joyeeta Award’
Five women received Joyeeta Award at a ceremony from Rahat Anwar, deputy commissioner (DC) of Rangpur on December 12 at the conference room of the DC.
The award was distributed under the Joyeeta Annesha Bangladesh Programme organised by Social Welfare Department and the District Administration. The awardees are: Merina Lovely, Staff Reporter, Channel-I, Silpi Begum, Saleha Begum, Anwara Begum and Fatema Yasmin
2 killed in separate incidents
Two people were killed in separate incidents in Nilphamari and Sylhet districts yesterday.
A rickshaw-van puller was killed as a microbus hit him in Jhunagach-Chapani switch gate area under Dimla upazila in Nilphamari district yesterday afternoon, said Muajjem Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Dimla Police Station.
The deceased was Nur Hossain, 45, son of Mohir Uddin, a resident of Uttar Chunakhali village of the upazila. In another incident, worker of Sylhet Agriculture University Kamal Hossain, 38, was electrocuted while he was repairing a cable on the university campus, police said.
