400-kV grid line between Bibiyana, Kaliakoir starts operations today

Staff Reporter

The newly constructed 400-kV Bibiyana–Kaliakoir double-circuit power transmission line, built by the Power Grid Company Bangladesh Limited (PGCB), will go into operation from today.

It will be the first 400-kV grid line in the country, said Masum-Al-Biruni, managing director of PGCB. Each PGCB double-circuit line has a capacity of 1,200 MW.
He also said this high-voltage line would facilitate the transmission of around 1,000 MW of electricity to the national grid from some power plants that have already been constructed and are under construction in Bibiyana in the Sylhet region.
The capacity of the national grid will also be increased manifold with the introduction of this new high-voltage line.
The length of this new transmission line is 168 km. It has been constructed under the 400-kV Bibiyana–Kaliakoir and 230-kV Bibiyana–Fenchuganj line development projects.
The project has been implemented with funding from the exchequer, the PGCB’s own funds, and the Korean Economic Develop-ment Fund (EDCF) from the Korean government.
This new line passes over Nabiganj, Baniachang, and Ajmeriganj upazilas of Habiganj district, Itna, Mithamoin, Nikli, Karimganj, Kotiadi, and Pakundia upazilas of Kishorganj, Gafargaon upazila of Maymensingh, and Kapasia, Sripur, Gazipur Sadar, and Kaliakor upazilas of Gazipur district.
The 400-kV line will operate at full capacity in Kaliakoir from 11am today. Earlier, the Meghnaghat–Aminbazaar 400-kV line started operations at 230 kV.
PGCB has constructed two 400-/230-kV grid substations at the two ends of the Bibiyana–Kaliakoir line.
The new line will work as a backbone line between Dhaka and Sylhet. There are several state-owned and privately-owned power plants in Bibiyana and many other small and medium-sized power plants in the rest of the Sylhet region.
This new grid line will help transmit electricity from those plants to the national grid line.
