BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan yesterday alleged that the government is blocking all the options of doing politics by its opponents as it has no accountability, reports BSS. “Even women are also being affected as they cannot exercise their democratic rights,” he told a discussion.
Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal arranged the programme at Nayapaltan Bhasani Auditorium, marking Begum Rokeya Day. Nazrul, a BNP standing committee member, said Begum Rokeya had worked relentlessly, even the last day of her life, for ensuring women rights. “She had been successful in her fight. We’ll have to follow the path she showed us to turn victorious in our struggle.” He said the life and dignity of women in Bangladesh are now uncertain and unsafe. “We must take an effective initiative to protect them, and the Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal must play the pivotal role in this regard.”
The BNP leader urged the Mahila Dal to take a strong position against repression and harassment of women, and work for ensuring their rights.
Speaking at the programme, another BNP leader, Asaduzzaman Ripon, accused the government of harassing their chairperson Khaleda Zia by implicating her in ‘false’ cases.
He, however, said the government will not be able to demoralise Khaleda with repressive acts. “This government has no capacity to harm our leader (Khaleda).”
Ripon said Sheikh Hasina’s government has pushed the nation towards a dark tunnel by snatching people’s voting rights. “She (Hasina) must take steps to restore voting rights to overcome the current political crisis.”
