Police arrested three people, including a union parishad chairman, in Kalaroa upazila in Satkhira on Saturday night in a case filed after a girl committed suicide as she was reportedly assaulted during a rural arbitration, reports UNB. The arrestees were Manirul Islam, UP chairman of Sonabaria union parishad, and his two associates—Chowkidar Islam and Joy. Emdadul Haque Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Kalaroa Police Station, said Afroza Khatun, 16, was assaulted both physically and verbally by the UP chairman during the arbitration on Friday. On Saturday evening, the girl hanged herself at her house. Afroza’s brother Ibrahim Khalil then filed a case with the police station against seven people, including the UP chairman. Police arrested them later at night. Court sent them to jail yesterday morning.
