The High Court yesterday issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to introduce separate question papers for admission seekers from English medium institutions. It also asked the government to explain why it should not be directed to provide equal facilities to the ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level students of English medium, who want to seek admission along with the Bangla medium students. The HC bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif came up with the order following a writ petition filed by Atiqur Rahman, a Supreme Court lawyer, in this regard. The University Grant Commission chairman, education secretary, health secretary, vice chancellor of Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), principal of Dhaka Medical College and director of medical education have been made respondents to reply to the rule within four weeks. Petitioner’s lawyer Reza Md Sadeqeen told reporters that the public universities and Medical Colleges take admission tests in Bangla question paper. Therefore, admission seekers from English medium institutions face problems. He also said that the Bangla medium students can appear in the admission test of BUET after getting 24 point among 25 points. But, the English medium students could not appear in the BUET exam if they would not get highest grade in their O and A levels exam, which is discriminatory in the eye of law, he said.
