KHULNA: Fishing of Parshe fry, a type of mullet, is going on unchecked in the canals and rivers of the Sundarbans defying restrictions, reports UNB.
About 20 cartels are involved in Parshe fry catching and transporting those through engine-driven boats over the last one week, according to sources at the Forests Department.
They said most of the cartels are now hauling the fry in Alorkol, Batlu, Debeki, Shapkhali, Mandarbaria and Jamtala areas of Khulna range.
There is a restriction on catching Parshe fry during its breeding period from November-January while plying of engine-driven boats inside the forest is also banned in the forest.
Locals alleged that the trawlers carrying Parshe fry are crossing the stations and outposts of the Forest Department without facing any challenge by its officials.
Contacted, Divisional Forest Officer of the Sundarbans West Zone, Muhammad Sayeed Ali said illegal plying of trawlers and catching of Parshe fry will be stopped in the forest at any cost.
