The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 yesterday took the charges of crimes against humanity pressed by the prosecution against Jatiya Party lawmaker MA Hannan and seven others from Mymensingh into cognizance.
"The tribunal has took the five charges into cognizance and set February 1 for passing further order in this regard," said prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chemon.
Apart from Hannan, the other accused are Hannan's son Rafique Sajjad, 62, Khandakar Golam Sabbir Ahmed, 69, Mizanur Rahman Mintu, 63, Hormuj Ali, 73, Mohammad Abdus Sattar, 64, Mohammad Fakruzzaman, 61, and Khandakar Golam Rabbani, 63. Of them, Fakruzzaman, Sattar and Rabbani are still on the run. The prosecution brought charges of genocide, murder, confinement and torture against the accused.
The investigation agency of the tribunal on July 11, 2016, finalised their probe report against the eight, bringing five charges of crimes against humanity against the accused. The ICT probe body submitted the report to the prosecution the next day.
Meanwhile, the ICT-1 yesterday indicted two alleged war criminals from Mymensingh, framing five charges of crimes against humanity against them.
"The tribunal framed five charges including of genocide, murder and rape against Reaz Uddin Fakir and Md Waz Uddin. The tribunal has set January 31, 2017, for placing opening statement by the prosecution," prosecutor Hrishikesh Saha told BSS.
According to the prosecution, Reaz, 65, was a member of Islami Chhatra Sangha and joined local Al-Badr Bahini and acted as its commander during the war, while Jamaat-e-Islami supporter Md Waz Uddin, 70, acted as a member of Razakar Bahini in 1971. Of the two, Reaz is in the custody.
