While he shot into the limelight following an epic performance against England, pressure was on Mehedi Hasan Miraj to prove that performance was not one-off incident and that he is here to stay for a long time.
But like his team Bangladesh, the 19-year old has a tougher job in hands. For a visiting team, New Zealand is always a tough place to thrive and for a spinner it is tougher than anticipation. The seam and swing friendly condition effectively neutralize the spinners there. To add problem with that, it would be his first tour with the senior side. But the good thing is that the off-spinner cum batsman didn’t let him be haunted with those facts. He rather himself set a strategy for him to be successful in the condition, entirely alien for him. “I know I won’t get a wicket suitable for my bowling there. But if I give up, I can never overcome the hurdles. So the best thing is to prepare myself to fight against the adversity,” Mehedi said ahead of leaving the country for Sydney to have a preparation camp there with the second batch of players yesterday.
“I have to be mentally strong. I know success may elude there and so I should have patience. I believe if you patiently wait for your time, you will be successful at one point.”
Mehedi however talked to his Rajshahi Kings teammate James Franklin, a former New Zealand player, about the condition of the New Zealand. He said Franklin is sincere enough to give him the information about the condition of there and some tips.
“I talked to him for quite a several times to know about the condition. He gave me all information and gave some tips as to how I can be successful there. I should execute that properly.”
Mehedi’s bowling performance against England put a shed on his batting even though he is primarily considered as a batting all-rounder. But apart from one match, he couldn’t do anything in batting in the recently concluded BPL tournament. Mehehi said he is focused on to do well in batting in New Zealand.
“It gives me immense pleasure when I do well in batting. I am trying to hone my batting skill so that I can show good performance with willow in New Zealand.”
