Former national team goalkeeper and a member of Swadhin Bangla Football team and also a valiant freedom fighter Major General (retd) Nurun Nabi died of old age complications at Dhaka CMH in Dhaka Cantonment yesterday morning. He was 70.
He played in the Dhaka First Division Football League in 1960s and 1970s in favour of Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club and Azad Sporting Club with distinction.
Nurun Nabi, a life member of Dhaka MSC, retired from the game during the liberation war while playing for Swadhin Bangla Football team in 1971 before joining the Bangladesh Army. He also played Pakistan for national team for a brief period in late 60s.
Bangladesh Olympic Association, Bangladesh Football Federation, Mohammedan Sporting Club, Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association, Krira Paribar and Bangladesh Sports Press Association have mourned the death of football Nurun Nabi and expressed their heartfelt sympathy with the bereaved family. They also prayed
for the salvation of the departed soul.
