The International Labour Organisation (ILO) along with some major donors is extending collaboration with the government to improve further the working conditions in the country’s apparel sector.
A Memorandum of Intent between the government and the donors and ILO to collaborate on a second phase of ILO’s programme to improve working conditions in the Ready Made Garment (RMG) sector will be signed in the capital, an ILO release said yesterday.
The agreement will be inked in presence of ILO Director General Guy Ryder who will be visiting Dhaka from December 10-13.
Another agreement will also be signed during his visit for a new skills programme funded by the European Union (EU).
During his stay, Ryder will also hold discussions with the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Minister for Labour and Employment Md Mujibul Haque, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali and Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Islam.
He will also take part in the Ninth GFMD Summit, besides attending the meetings with representatives of workers’ and employers’ organisations as well as development partners.
Ryder will address the inaugural ceremony of the Dhaka Summit on Skills, Employability, and Decent Work 2016 which forms part of the ILO’s Future of Work initiative.
He will join the launch of a new ILO project funded by Sweden and Demark which aims to build social dialogue and harmonious industrial relations in the Bangladesh Ready Made Garment Industry.
