“Man is not made for defeat. Man can be destroyed, but not defeated!” _ says Santiago, the aged Cuban fisherman in Ernest Hemingway’s famous novel, ‘The old man and the sea’.
Materially, human beings are not born for discomfiture, but to survive amidst diehard realities and turbulences. Thus, they have to undergo several odds and troubles for the dream of better fortune.
“Of course, struggle is life. Facing the challenges is life. But it turns severe when a new graduate finds no way of getting a job. A dream, indeed!” uttered Mijanur Rahman, one of many job seekers waiting near a public library in the capital recently. “The majority of Bangladesh’s new graduates and post graduates used to prepare themselves only for jobs. However, it is a matter of great concern that the number of vacant posts is extremely few than the demand in the country. So, those who fail to get a job _ a highly desired thing_ they sink into oblivion of utter despair,” Rahman added.
Like millions of job seekers, Jony, a new graduate, is also preparing for a job before completing his post graduation. He was seen rushing amid several book stalls at Nilkhet to buy a job preparation guide. But he couldn’t buy any books that day due to the high prices. Like Jony, many job seekers are facing similar problems. Since they have no suitable way of earning sufficient money, they cannot afford extra things, like costly preparation guides. Needless to say, the profit-oriented book-sellers are also behaving like leeches with the hapless job seekers.
Undoubtedly, Bangladesh is beset with many challenges. The employment of its educated youth is one of them. According to the recently published Commonwealth Youth Development Index (YDI), Bangladesh is lagging far behind in providing employment for its youth. In the index, Bangladesh stands 177th in the field of employment and opportunity among 183 countries of the world. And it is really a matter of despondency.
According to the latest survey of the country’s labour force by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), a total of 2,630,000 active people are unemployed. From this survey, it can easily be understood that it is non- implementation of proper measures, or lack of timely planning in this regard, which is to blame.
However, there is no alternative to taking appropriate steps to battle unemployment and mobilise our young society for the sake of development.
Is it really that hard a nut to crack to meet the challenge?
