Recently, Yunnan province released its 13th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the province’s cultural industry. Over the next five years, Yunnan will focus on cultivating six pillars. These include the ethnic cultural tourism and leisure industry, the ethnic and folk handicrafts industry, the press and publishing service industry, the radio, television and film service industry, the cultural information transmission industry and the cultural and creative design service industry. The province aims to develop unique, high-end and international cultural products so that these six pillars will become a mainstay of the economy by 2020.

To support its cultural industry with the six pillars, Yunnan has set up a series of specific targets. In the press and publishing service industry, the “Yunnan Education Cloud” and other key projects will be implemented. In the radio, television and film service industry, major realistic themes will be explored every year, with the establishment of three to five film and television bases, and the construction of 1,000 movies theatres. These efforts will combine to build a Yunnan brand. In the ethnic cultural tourism and leisure industry, the province plans to organise the China (Yunnan) International Ethnic Costume Cultural Festival, as well as foster ten world-famous tourist festival brands. In the cultural and creative design service industry, the province aims to build Kunming into “the capital of ethnic, cultural and creative design”, while in the ethnic and folk handicrafts industry, the province will rely on its existing emerald, ruby, sapphire, garnet, smoky quartz and other precious stone resources to foster and expand its coloured gemstone businesses.
