On the list of Yunnan’s eighteen oddities, one item says that “trains go abroad but not inland”. Strange as it may seem, this was the case when the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway went into operation in 1910.
Today, Yunnan is accessible by high-speed railways, which will connect with China-Laos Railway, the China-Thailand Railway and the Pan-Asian (Kunming-Singapore) Railway. Such a web of tracks will bring great opportunities for the economic development of China and its neighbouring countries.
In our interviews, we found that many people in neighbouring countries are very concerned about the news that Yunnan is accessible by high-speed rail. A Lao journalist said. “The construction of the China-Laos Railway is now in full swing. Upon its completion, it will facilitate Laos’s economic development and improve the living standard of the Lao people.”
A journalist from the Yangon Media Group in Myanmar expressed similar expectations. “With Yunnan accessible by high-speed rail, the province will be more closely connected with other Chinese provinces. A lot of Myanmese agricultural products and fruits will be transported to thousands upon thousands of Chinese families by this high-speed rail network.”
Indeed, as an important hub connecting China with South and Southeast Asian countries, Yunnan province will be further opened, both internally and externally, with the advent of high-speed railways. This represents the expectations of both people in Yunnan and people in neighbouring countries.
With the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative, the day is drawing closer and closer when Yunnan shares with the neighbouring countries the economic development opportunities brought by high-speed railways.
