Drama and Dramatics Department of Jahangirnagar University will bring their much-acclaimed production ‘Karbalar Jari’ on stage today at the Mahila Samiti Mancha in the capital’s Baily Road, as a part of the ongoing 10-day theatre festival titled ‘BotTala Rangamela’. The festival, featuring new plays, has been organised to celebrate 8th founding anniversary of theatre troupe BotTala. Directed by Reza Arif, ‘Karbalar Jari’ is an adaptation from Moharram part from Mir Mosharraf Hossain’s historical novel Bishad Sindhu. In the play ‘Karbalar Jari’ a teacher of the department, Karbalar Jari narrates martyrdom of Imam Husayn Ibn Ali, grandson of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh), at the battlefield in the War of Karbala on Muharram 10 in 61 Hijri. Raihan Istiak Sonet, Abir, Prantik, Amit,Hridoy,Setu, Oijointy, Smrity and others will act various characters in the play, who narrates the tragic story through narration, music and body movements.
According to director Reza Mohammad Arif the play has been focused on Imam Husayn and his followers’ cry for water as their access to water was prevented by Umar Ibn Sa’ad during the war. The the aim of making play is to make people aware about the hardship of Imam Husayn and his followers at the scarcity of water. People in the country might also face a similar problem at the withdrawal of water from main rivers in the upper riparian.
