Erosion renders 300 families homeless

Kurigram: Erosion has taken a serious turn along the banks of the Brahmaputra river, rendering at least 300 families of Nayachar Bazar and Kodalkati Bazar in Rajibpur upazila homeless for the last three weeks, reports UNB.
During a visit to the areas mentioned above, this UNB correspondent found that homesteads and business establishments in Diararchar, Sabujpara, Goalpara, Bazar Para areas have already been eroded, and it is feared the Diararchar Primary School is going to be eroded very soon.
Bilkis Khatun, a resident of Sabujpara village in Nayachar, said the river had devoured half of the 50-years-old Nayachar Bazar and the remaining part of the bazaar will be eroded soon.
On November 17, the villagers of Nayachar area held a human chain in the area demanding immediate action for stopping river erosion. Chan Mia, a resident of Nayachar union, said, “I’ve lost everything as the Brahmaputra has taken away my homesteads in a sudden erosion.”
Besides, the erosion has continued along a 2 km stretch including Bazar Para, Sajai, Sajai Hatudewani Para and Karigarpara under Kodalkati union, rendering 200 families homeless.
Rajibpur Upazila Chairman Shafiul Alam said, “We have informed the matter to the Water Development Board (WDB) and the deputy commissioner.”
Contacted, Kurigram WDB’s executive engineer Mahfuzur Rahman said already some sand sacks have been placed to protect the riverbank in Nayachar area and other necessary steps will be taken after the allocation is made.
