Three extremists killed in gunfight

Three alleged extortionists, members of an extremist party, were killed in a gunfight with police early yesterday at Motmura village under Gangni Upazila of Meherpur. Police also seized some firearms and ammunitions from the spot. The deceased were identified as Tuhin, 21, son of Fakir Mohammed, Tazmul, 27, son of Altaf and Mohibul, 24, son of Chand Ali of village Bholadanga-Manikdia of Gangni Upazila in Meherpur district. Police claimed that all three were members of some outlawed extremist party.
According to Anisur Rahman, Superintendent of Police in Meherpur, some unidentified men had been demanding illegal toll from brickfield owners in the district posing themselves as members of an outlawed party.
On early hours of Tuesday, a group of extortionists numbering around 25 went to the Ekota Brickfield located at Motmura village of Gangni upazila and demanded money from the owners.
After receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot. Sensing police presence, the extortionists hurled bombs at police and also opened fire on law enforcers. Police retaliated with gunfire and a gun battle ensued, he said. At one stage, the extortionists retreated and police found three of the extremists dead. One LG shooter gun, one pistol, two rounds of bullets, two bombs and one local weapon were seized from the spot, said the police superintendent. The bodies were sent to sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
