Sri Lankan Dinoka Karun Ratma and Thitrang of Vietnam have been drawn as men’s and women’s top seeds in the Yonex Sun-Rise International Open Badminton Tournament which kicks off today at the Shaheed Tajuddin Indoor Stadium.
A total of 104 shuttlers, 65 male and 39 women from 13 countries are taking part in the 4th edition of the only open international meet of the country. Shapla and Elina are the best seeded among 26 players (18 men and eight women) from host country are participating in the week long meet of 17,500 US Dollars.
“We will try to offer our maximum effort within limited preparation and we are hopeful to do well,” said Shapla.
“We are taking part with short time preparation, it would be better if we have longtime practice before the competition, but we are very much optimistic to do good result,” said the country’s number one women shuttler.
Shapla thinks the participants from India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka are strong among the all 13 countries, as she said, if she would have to face the opponents from these countries, would be something tricky.
“India, Malaysia and Sri Lankan participants are ahead of us, they have huge experiences playing in the international meet. We have no international exposure, we have the opportunity to play in the only international competition in this tournament.”
About the incident was occurred last week, Shapla said that the president assured them to punish the persons who will be found guilty and they concentrate to play for the country.
Hasibul Rahman Shakil, coach of Bangladesh team while talking to this correspondent said that they are expecting with women’s single and doubles with Shapla Akhter and Elina Sultana while two or three male shuttlers have prospect to qualify into third round.
Shakil was very much optimistic about women’s players while he said – “I am confident with our women participants, I am very much positive about their qualifying into phase.”
