Idris Razakar gets death penalty

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) yesterday awarded the death penalty in absentia to Idris Ali Sardar, a Razakar from Shariatpur, for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Anwarul Haque, handed down the death penalty on Charges 1 and 2 brought against the fugitive Idris Ali for the murder of 200 people and the killings of numerous others as well as torture of women. It also sentenced him to jail unto death on Charge 3 for killing four persons with bayonets and seven years’ imprisonment on Charge 4 for forced deportation of Hindus.
In its order, the ICT said, “The abovementioned sentences of death be executed by hanging the convicted accused Idris Ali Sardar by the neck or by shooting him till he is dead, as decided by the government.”
The tribunal also instructed the chief of police and home secretary of Bangladesh to take necessary steps to arrest the war criminal Idris Ali with the help of Interpol, if necessary.
However, the ICT dropped the proceedings against another war crimes accused, Solaiman Mollah alias Solaiman Moulvi, who was also an accused in the case. The tribunal dropped the proceedings against him as he died on October 25 at the prison cell in Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
On May 2, the tribunal framed charges against Idris and Solaiman Mollah, 84, of Kashipur Muslimpara in the district. According to the prosecution, Idris was a leader of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and joined Razakar Bahini. He was involved with Jamaat politics after the war ended. Solaiman, on the other hand, was involved with the Muslim League and later joined Jamiatul Ulamay e-Islami.
The two joined the ‘Razakar Bahini’ when the war broke out and committed various crimes against humanity. The prosecution team expressed satisfaction over the verdict. Prosecutor Zead Al Malum said they were satisfied with the verdict as the tribunal ensured justice by delivering the verdict.
However, state-appointed defence counsel Gazi MH Tamim said he was not happy with the verdict. “My client will be acquitted in the higher court if he turns himself in and challenges the tribunal verdict,” he added. The defence has a month’s time to appeal against the ICT verdict, but Idris Ali has to surrender to appeal in the High Court. With this verdict, the ICT has awarded the death sentence to 28 people for their involvement in wartime crimes.
