Religious minorities should be included in decision making process to ensure their rights, said eminent columnist Syed Abul Maksud.
“The government should have commitment to ensure fundamental rights of religious minorities in Bangladesh,” he said while addressing at launching ‘Bangladesh State of Minorities Report 2016’ organised by Nagarik Uddyog at National Press Club.
Moderated by chief executive of Nagarik Udyog, Zakir Hossen while general secretary of Hindu Buddha Christian Oikya Parishad advocate Ranadas Gupta, executive director of BLAST Barrister Sarah Hossen, and human rights activist Mukatshree Chakma spoke the programme, among others.
Abul Maksud said minorities should be empowered politically to stop repression over them. He emphasized on creating pressure over the government in this regard.
“If the government would not implement the demand of minorities—we should go to movement,” he noted.
Advocate Rana Dasgupta said if the issue of minority rights will not be given citizen movement shape-their rights will not be secured.
He raised question that why percentage of minority came down to 10 per cent from 20 per cent during last 45 years.
