Call to prevent non-communicable diseases
Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday said massive awareness campaign should be launched across the country to prevent Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
Unhealthy lifestyle has contributed to the rapid rise of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the country, which is leading to increase in death rate, she told a workshop at the Secretariat of the Jatiya Sangsad in the capital, an official release said.
Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat organised the workshop titled Prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Advocate Md Fazle Rabbi Mia, Chief Whip ASM Feroz, Whip Md Shahab Uddin, Members of Parliament (MPs), senior secretary of Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat Dr Md Abdur Rob, Directorate General of Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) Prof Dr Abdul Kalam Azad, among others, addressed the workshop. Dr Habibe Millat, MP, presented the keynote paper at the workshop.
Dr Shirin said Bangladesh has made a remarkable progress in different key indicators of Health, including reduction of child and maternal mortality rate as the government has sincerely implemented various programmes.
She said, Members of Parliament (MPs) could play an important role in creating mass awareness for prevention of different diseases.
The speaker urged the lawmakers to form a forum on prevention of Non- Communicable Diseases aiming to achieve the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the World Health Organisation, NCDs were estimated to have contributed to almost 60per cent of deaths in the world and among them about 80per cent occur in the developing countries.
