Several civic rights groups yesterday demanded reconstituting the Department of Shipping examination board comprising experts from the Marine Academy and BUET for inland vessel mastership and drivership examinations, reports UNB.
They also demanded preparing question sheets of the examinations by the officials of Marine Academy or BUET who are not members of the examination board, withdrawing the project director of GMDSS project, reforming water vessel design approval committee comprising experts, ensuring the presence of ship surveyors at workplaces on every working day and forming an a high-powered new committee for probing the alleged human trafficking by airways using illegal ‘No Objection Certificate (NOC)’ issued by the Department of Shipping against seagoing ship crew.
The demands were made at a press conference at Mukti Bhaban of Purana Paltan in the capital.
Citizens Rights Movement secretary general Tusar Rehman alleged that the DoS officials issued NOCs ignoring the decision of the inter-ministerial meeting for the ship crew to go abroad by airways without any visa.
He said although two probe panels were formed to look into the matter, they were yet to submit their reports for unknown reasons. Water resources expert engineer M Inamul Haque, Council to Protect Passengers’ Rights of Bangladesh general secretary Sekender Hayat, Nirapd Sarak O Noupath Bastobayan Jote member secretary Rafiqul Islam Sabuj, environmental activist Pankaj Baruri and Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey were, among others, present at the press conference.
