The 4th Yonex-Sunrise Bangladesh Open Badminton International Challenge will kick-off today at the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Indoor Gymnasium. Over one hundred shuttlers drawn from 13 countries are participating five events in the five-day competition.
The participating shuttlers including 39 female players will compete for five events of the US$17550-prize money tournament - men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles. Competitors from Vietnam have already arrived in the capital.
“It is just an international ranking tournament we have been organizing since 2013 with the help of Yonex-Sunrise and through this tournament, the players can improve their ranking,” said Bangladesh Badminton Federation acting general secretary Golam Aziz Jilani.
In the previous editions, no Bangladeshi players could reach the knockout stage in any singles events but Bangladesh reached the quarterfinals in mixed event but this time there is no target for the Bangladeshi 15 shuttlers, who had recently been troubled by a group of shuttlers over the control of the Badminton Payers’ Welfare Association during their preparation for the tournament.
Since the incident happened on Thursday, the national players have refrained from the training and even the federation executives dare to come forward to create a healthy atmosphere for the players to carry out their regular practice sessions, alleged by a section of national players.
