In any civilised society disabled persons share equal rights as any other normal citizens. More seriously, the United Nations Convention has clearly specified the rights for the disabled people—where it is clearly stated that they should not be subject to any form of discrimination—will have equal opportunities, accessibility and effective participation in society. Moreover, disabled children will have to be respected while the society ensures and preserves their identities and acceptance.
We must adhere to these values of the UN convention.
Ensuring congenial atmosphere to put an end to discrimination against the disable people has become the need of the hour, in order to enable them to lead a decent life. The physically challenged people must be considered as an integral part of our society. Also it is high-time to connect them with other citizens aiming at the overall development of the nation.
Concerning allowance for the disabled, it was learnt that about 5880 disabled people are now getting allowance from the government at the rate of Taka 500 each. Not only the sum is insufficient, but in actuality the total number of receivers of the allowance is also too few. Now the government’s concerned authorities should figure out the accurate number of disabled persons while bringing them under a close scanner. We don’t expect any preferential treatment to be shown to disabled people in general. To us they are all same.
Various organisations in Bangladesh working for elevating living standards and livelihood conditions of disabled persons brought out ralleys, held meetings and seminars countrywide on the occsion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities a few days ago. However, the points and programmes discussed on that day will have to be carried forward, planned and most importantly implemented. Actions speak louder than voice, otherwise the day will merely remain confined to observance only.
Lastly, besides the government our private organizations and corporate houses too should come forward in terms of allocating special job quotas for handicapped people. Not to forget that disabilities are complex difficulties reflected at the interaction between features of the individual’s body and also of the society in which the person lives. Understandably, the rights for people with disabilities are very important for their lives. Not as a liabilty, we should prioritise their rights as an important social responsibility.
