Sri Lanka shatter Bangladesh hopes

Sports Reporter

Bangladesh women’s cricket team’s high hopes to play in the Asia Cup final shattered when they were humbled by their Sri Lankan counterparts by seven wickets in their last group phase encounter of the ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup at the Asian Institute of Technology Ground in Bangkok yesterday.

They had set a pre-tournament target to upset either India or Pakistan en route to their ultimate destination but they conceded defeats to both Indian and Pakistan by making the lowest T20 scores. In between the two high-profile clashes, they pulled off back-to-back victories against Thailand and Nepal.
The Tigress accumulated 93 for three in their allocated 20 overs after which the Islanders run down the paltry target at the cost of losing just three wickets with six balls remaining.
Put in to bat first, Bangladesh’s women made a slow start as they put on 43 inside 10 overs by the exchange of one wicket when opener Sharmin Sultana walked back to the pavilion with 17 being caught and bowled by Chamari Jayangani, who captured a brace for 24. Together with Shaila Sharmin, opener Sanjida Islam, therefore, tried to stretch the innings by hitting a big partnership but they could share a 28-run for the second stand before being dismissed of Sanjida, who top-scored for Bangladesh with 35. The right-handed batter clattered three fours in her 49-ball 35.
Shaila Sharmin remained unbeaten at 25 off 38 with two boundaries, while Jahanara Alam was on three not out.
In the wake of Rumana Ahmed’s shrewd delivery, Sri Lanka women’s cricket team lost their opener Nipuni Hansika (10) to chase down the target. But Bangladesh eves could not keep their momentum going. Rumana Ahmed snapped up two wickets for seven for Bangladesh.
