BPL governing council reduced Rangpur Riders’ wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad’s punishment that was slapped for breaching the BCB Code of Conduct during the BPL 2016 match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on November 28.
This Afghan player butted Rajshahi Kings’ all-rounder Sabbir Rahman Rumman with his bat on the stroke of trudging back to the pavilion being dismissed. His attitude is tantamount to punishable offence what could not avert the hawk-eyed umpires.
He was found to have violated Article 2.1.1 of the BCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.
The player was fined 30 percent of his match fees and suspended for an ensuing match of the tournament. In addition to the sanction imposed for his breach of Article 2.2.1, four (04) demerit points have been added to Shahzad’s disciplinary record.
Four demerit points equate to a ban from two (02) matches. As per Article 7.7 of the Code, the suspensions shall run concurrently (not cumulatively) and as such and he is now banned from Rangpur Riders’ next two (02) matches of BPL 2016.
Although Shahzad was not seen against Dhaka Dynamites, he was later seen to play against Barisal Bulls.
BPL member secretary IH Mallick in this regard said that they reduced the punishment on Mohammad Shahzad for the appeal of the players along with the interest of the BPL.
“Admitting his fault, Mohammad Shahzad appealed to the BPL governing council to reduce the punishment after the end of the last match against Dhaka Dynamites. In the aspect of his appeal, we have reduced his punishment. We think there is no problem here. Punishment has been reduced as per the rules,” said IH Mallick.
“There was no pressure from any quarter. The way the tournament committee settled the matter everybody have to accept the decision. We did not do anything out of the rules.” Mallick told The Independent.
“BPL governing council took the decision to reduce Sahahzad’s punishment for the interest of the BPL and for the appeal of the player,” he added.
Shahzad scored 305-the sixth highest of the BPL-4, so far from 10-match road string with two half-centuries. Yesterday’s match against Barisal Bulls,
that turned to be top-four decider, he top-scored for Riders with 48.
