RAJSHAHI: Ensuring congenial atmosphere to make an end to discrimination against the people with disabilities and special needs has become an urgent need to enable them leading a decent life, reports BSS.
The physically challenged people should be termed as the integral part of the society and time has come to bring them into the mainstream of the society for overall development of the nation.
The observations came in a post-rally discussion held in conference hall of Shishu Academy in the city yesterday. Department of Social Service (DSS) and District Administration jointly organised the discussion in observance of the International and National Disabled Day-2016.
“Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want” was the main theme of the Day.
Various organisations working for elevating living and livelihood condition of the persons with special needs joined the programme.
Akhter Jahan, MP, and Social Worker Shaheen Akter Rainy addressed the meeting as the chief and special guests respectively with Parvej Raihan, additional deputy commissioner (Education and ICT), in the chair while Deputy Director of DSS Rubina Yeasmin welcomed the participants.
The chief guest emphasised the need for establishing a sound and friendly atmosphere for the disabled persons to ensure a dignified position for them in society.
Referring to the government steps for welfare of the disabled persons, she said, all concerned should make the best use of all facilities in the greater interest of these people.
Through a nationwide survey, the government has identified more than 15 lakh challenged people and has been preparing a powerful database for them, she told the meeting.
Akhter Jahan urged the affluent section of the society as well as the philanthropists to come forward with their helping hands to supplement the government’s efforts to properly place the disadvantaged people.
The disabled children must be given an equal opportunity in institutional education like the privileged ones so that they could grow as worthy citizens and contribute to the country’s development, she added.
Earlier, a rally was brought out parading different city streets before being converged into the meeting venue.
