Rajshahi Nagarik Odhikar Rakkha Songram Parishad called half-day hartal in Rajshahi on December 11, to press home their four-point demand including protesting in increase of holding tax in the city corporation area.

On Saturday morning, the organisation announced their programme by a press conference in Malopara area of the city.
Advocate Enamul Haque, convener of the Parishad, at his written statement mentioned that Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) as a service oriented institution cannot impose such a high and exorbitant burden of tax to the city dwellers.
He said “People who live in Rajshahi mostly belong to low income group.
There are no large industries or business enterprises in Rajshahi. Most people who live in city have no houses of their own.
Only a few have their own houses and many of them earned their livelihood by renting those small houses. But RCC has irrationally increased holding tax of those houses”. The house which had an annual holding tax of Tk. 390 a year last year, has been fixed at Tk 9,000 this year. Earlier, in protest against such abnormal increase of holding tax, supporters of the Parishad also organised a human chain and sit in programme in front of RCC on July-28 last.
He demanded immediate withdrawal of excess holding tax and refix the tax taking into consideration with the economic condition of city dwellers.
At the press conference finally he said that they will observe half-day peaceful hartal programme on December 11, from 6am to 12pm. He also called to city dwellers to join with them for drum up the hartal, for the interests of city dwellers. At the press conference, they also raise four-point demand.
Those are—reduction of holding tax, decreasing trade license fee, cancellation of signboard fees and demand of the tolerable level imposition of VAT.
