When there are virtually no parks for children in the capital of about 16 millions of people, due to some problem or other, the existing very little parks of this vast city are also closing down one after another.
The two amusement parks, Wonderland Park in Gulshan and Shishu Mela in Shyamoli, are now closed for the children, the first one in 2012 and the latter one was just about a week ago. In both cases it was the legality of the venues that was in question.
According to a report of this newspaper Friday, Wonderland Park was closed down as the court declared its leasing with the city corporation illegal. On the other hand, Shyamoli’s Shishu Mela was shut down because the park operator allegedly breached the contract for running the park. The DNCC authorities said that the park was sealed because the lease holder had failed to pay the money for contract renewal with the corporation. After the closing of these two parks, the only venue in the capital where the children are thronging is Shishu Park at Suhrawardy Uddyan which is poorly equipped with instrument for children to play.
However, the absence of facilities for children to play and make amusement proves that the authorities here care little about the needs of children which should not be the case. Children ought to play as they do need nutritious foods to grow up. But the capital city is now left with no park, no field, for children. Yet ideally speaking, in each ward of the city corporation, there should have been a spacious park for children with all its paraphernalia.
Now to develop parks in adequate number, it is the two city corporations that have to take the responsibility. We cannot allow our children to always remain glued to TV or internet for recreation. These things are not only making our children obese, to a certain extent; they also are hampering their natural mental growth. Yet it goes without saying that our children are our future and we cannot put our future at stake. Therefore, for healthy growth of our children we have to make amusement parks and fields for them. This is vitally important for a happy and prosperous Bangladesh.
