Graft case:?Mosharrafs bail petition sent to CJ

UNB

The High Court yesterday sent the bail petition of BNP leader Dr Khandker Mosharraf Hossain in a money laundering case to the Chief Justice for hearing, reports UNB.
An HC bench comprising Justice Syed M Ziaul Karim and Justice Sheikh M Zakir Hossain passed the order after the state counsels opposed the hearing in the bench saying it has no authority to hear the petition in a case filed by the Anti Corruption Commission.
Mosharraf’s lawyer Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon said they filed the petition for interim bail of the BNP leader as he is ill.
The HC bench sent the petition to the Chief Justice following the opposition of the state, he said, adding that now the Chief Justice will assign the bench.
Police arrested Mosharraf on March 12 last year in connection with the case. Since then, he has been in jail.
On February 6, 2014, ACC director Nasim Anwar filed the case against Mosharraf for allegedly siphoning off money abroad. Nearly seven months after filing of the case, the ACC investigator submitted his investigation report to the Commission.
On August 14 last year, the ACC submitted chargesheet against the BNP standing committee member in the case.
According to the ACC investigation report, Dr Mosharraf laundered British pound of about 8.04 lakh (equivalent to Tk 9.54 crore) he earned illegally to the United Kingdom when he was the Health and Family Welfare Minister during 2001-2006.
Earlier, the graft watchdog collected documents related to his graft allegations from the British government through the mutual legal assistance request (MLAR) of the Attorney General Office.
After examining evidence, the ACC found that a fixed term deposit of about 8.04 lakh pound was deposited in a joint account (AC 108492) of Dr Mosharraf and his wife Bilkis Akter Hossain at Lloyds TSB Offshore Private Banking, Guernsey.
After 1994, Dr Mosharraf and his wife opened the bank account in the UK bank using diplomatic passports. Although Bangladesh Bank’s approval is mandatory in opening a bank account abroad, they did not get it from the central bank, the investigation report says.
