UNB

State Minister for Social Welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed said the government has already built a database of some 15 lakh physically challenged people of the country and will work to find out the reasons behind disabilities and to curb those, reports UNB.
The minister came up with the announcement while addressing a press conference at his office ahead of International Day of People with Disability on December 3. Nuruzzaman said some 7.5 lakh disable people were given Tk 540 crore this year as allowance.
Besides, a total of Tk 50 crore was distributed among some 70,000 physically challenged students as stipend while the government introduced residential education system for 640 students with visual impairments of 64 districts aiming to boost up their academic career, the junior minister added.
A total of six E-learning centers were built to give information and technology training to the visually disabled students under the supervision of Access to Information (a2i) programme, he said.
Alongside, six training and rehabilitation centers have been introduced in six divisions in order to ensure safety for the disabled people, Nuruzzaman said.
The government also enacted ‘Rights of the Persons with Disabilities and their Protection Act, 2013’ and ‘Neuro Developmental Disability Protection Trust Act, 2013’ for ensuring the rights of the disabled people, he added.
Disability Day, or the International Day of People with Disability, is a day that has been promoted by the United Nations since 1992 aiming to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability, together with helping to make people more aware of the rights, dignity and welfare of disabled people, as well as raising awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons into every aspect of life, from economic, to political, to social and cultural.
