A former country head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Stefan Priesner, has allegedly sold his SUV, which he had bought in the duty-free quota, to a mid-level UNDP official in Bangladesh who does not have the privilege. This is against the laws.
Customs officials traced the car—a Mitsubishi Pajero—to the Uttara residence of Ashikul Hasib Tarik, the mid-level UNDP official. The car has a yellow licence plate on it. This is issued in Bangladesh only to cars used by privileged people in diplomatic positions.
The director general of the customs intelligence department, Moinul Khan, said that Preisner left Bangladesh to join as Uzbekistan’s UNDP country head. He sold the car to Tarik without completing the formalities needed to sell a vehicle bought for a privileged person.
Such cars are brought in the duty-free quota. So, if such cars are sold or handed over to a person without such facility, the buyer has to pay the due taxes for the car, the taxation rule of the country states.
“Preisner did not even submit the documents issued by the customs department. He sold it to a mid-level UNDP officer, Ashikul Hasib Tarik,” Moinul said. He added that legal action will be initiated against both Preisner and Tarik.
The Independent tried to speak to Tarik, but could not reach him on his mobile phone.
