Bring 4 women before court Jan 16: HC

The High Court yesterday directed the authorities of Kashimpur Women’s Central Jail in Gazipur to produce four female prisoners, who have been languishing in jail for seven to eight years without trial in four separate murder cases, before the court on January 16 next.

It also issued a rule asking the government to explain why four under-trial female prisoners of Kashimpur jail should not be granted bail.
In a suo moto move, the HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice JMB Hasan came up with the order and rule after Supreme Court Legal Aid committee member Ainul Nahar Siddiqua brought the information to the attention of the HC bench.
Prisoners Sumi Akter Reshma and Shanaj Begum from Narayanganj, Razia Sultana from Gazipur and Rani alias Nupur from Mymensingh have been in the jail since 2009 in four separate murder cases. But their trial proceedings are yet to be finished, Siddiqua told the court. 
Nupur was sent to jail in on November 21, 2009 while Razia on May 21, 2009, Shahnaz on September 16, 2008, and Sumi landed in jail on January15, 2009, according to the legal aid committee’s information.
The legal aid committee has collected the information from the jail authorities.  
In its order, the HC bench also sought files and documents of the four separate cases. 
The HC will hear their statements on January 16, the concerned lawyer said.
