A special club of NSU

A special club of NSU

Earth Club of North South University (NSU) is a student club that works for the betterment of the environment. Earth Club, a student activity club,  started off in 1996 with just a bunch of students from the Environmental Science Department of North South University. Continuing its work throughout the years, it now encompasses students from all different disciplines within NSU. This just goes to show the growing environmental concerns in our society.
The main objective of Earth Club is to raise awareness by means of workshops and seminars, and participating in the celebrations of important international dates, such as the Earth Day, observed in April. Their main attractions are the trips; day-long trips and excursions that span a week allow Earth Club’s members to get an up-close view of the effect humans have on the environment.
Earth Club regularly ogranises several events and it is considered an active club of NSU. On 11 February, 2013 a three-day long programme namely ‘Encounter 6’ organised by the Earth Club of NSU was launched. The theme the encounter was ‘Human Interventions inn Ecosystem’- interventions such as deforestation, hunting, industrial residue etc. The event consisted of an exhibition that shows how humans  are damaging ecosystem along with a seminar highlighting this important issue.
Earth Club of NSU raised awareness about the environment among school children through its ‘Environmental School Campaign’ throughout April and May of 2014. Members of the club raised awareness about environmental matter and eco-friendly behaviour among students from different schools of Dhaka city through the event.
This year, the club launched ‘Encounters 8’ on February 20, 2015 with the theme “Continents: Existence to obliteration”, at the NSU campus. ‘Encounters’ is a 3D exhibition hosted annually with the portrayal of a different environmental theme. The previous Encounters displayed themes such as biodiversity, Sundarbans and impacts of tourism in Bangladesh. Encounters 8 brought together a bigger picture of environmental impacts across the seven continents into one frame. It highlighted climate change due to increasing temperatures by global warming as the reason behind all the environmental disasters across the world.
Earth Club of NSU the partner of ‘value for waste’, a project of Swisscontact ( A Switzerland based organization). On this regard, A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with Swisscontact. The objective of the MoU is to work jointly on proper waste management and recycling of wastes.
