Visiting Indian Defence Minister Manohar Gopalkrishna Prabhu Parrikar yesterday stressed the need for taking joint efforts to enhance military ties between Bangladesh and India, UNB reports.
The Indian minister came up with the view when he met President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban.
Mentioning that terrorism is a global problem, Manohar said India has been working to establish regional peace.
Welcoming the minister to Bangabhaban, Abdul Hamid said Bangladesh follows zero tolerance policy in combating terrorism in all its forms.
He expressed condolences for dastardly terrorist attack on the army base at Uri, Kashmir and on the Indian Air Force Base at Pathankot.
The president’s Press secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting. Observing that Bangladesh and India enjoy excellent bilateral relations, Abdul Hamid said the ties are expanding gradually.
He urged the Indian minister to send more Indian military officials to Bangladesh for training for deepening relations between the armed forces of the two countries. The president recalled with gratitude the contributions of the people and government of India in Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, and said many valiant soldiers of Indian defence forces embraced martyrdom in the war.
Earlier in the day, the Indian defence minister arrived in Dhaka on a two-day visit, adds our Special Correspondent. The visit aims to strengthen military cooperation between the two friendly neighbours.
Parrikar, leading an 11-member high-power defence delegation, reached Dhaka at 11am and was received by the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division, Lt Gen. Md Mahfuzur Rahman.
Deputy chiefs of the Indian army, air force and navy separately met the chiefs of the three wings of the armed forces of Bangladesh at their offices.
They discussed ways to strengthen relations in their respective fields and sought each other’s cooperation.
Parikkar is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during his stay. He would also meet the Prime Minister’s security adviser Maj. Gen. Tarique Ahmed Siddique (retd).
Parrikar, the first Indian defence minister to come calling, will visit the military academy in Chittagong.
Top defence ministry officials said the focus of the trip was to deepen security ties and firm up a defence cooperation agreement. The agreement is likely to be signed when Hasina visits New Delhi around December 17, according to an Indian media report.
The report said a new defence cooperation framework, which will lead to stepped-up military supplies, technology transfer, training and joint exercises, as well as closer cooperation in counter-terrorism, will be discussed during Parrikar’s visit.
