We are left with little words to express our sympathy for those who have lost their relatives and friends in the Colombian plane crash. In one of the most heart-wrenching tragedies in South American sporting history, nearly all of Brazilian club Chapecoense Real’s players, its management team and media contingent who were on board the plane died on that fateful Monday night. Dozens of families have been affected by the great tragedy and Brazil has fittingly declared a three-day national mourning for it.
The plane carrying the team of Brazil’s first division crashed just it was about to land in Medellin, Colombia where Chapecoense was scheduled to play against Colombian side Atlético Nacional in the final of the Copa Sudamericana, dubbed as South America’s answer to the European League.
Thankfully not all the people on board numbering 72 died. There were six survivors: three players, two Bolivian crew members and one Brazilian journalist. The plane tragedy is indeed massive for the families and friends of the victims. For the thousands of fans of the players, the accident surely has caused great pain. To honour the dead, a mass wake will be organized inside the stadium of the Brazilian club.
The news of the tragedy was indeed greatly shocking to the world of football, specially the Brazilian football, but the accident was also very hard for the Brazil’s media as there were its 20 journalists among the victims. The journalists were there to cover the team’s performance from Colombia.
Though it is still unclear what caused the tragedy, it has been assumed that the plane might have run out of fuel in the final stages of its flight. The cause of the accident would, however, be revealed one day but the lives lost in the accident will never come back. However, Brazil’s top-flight football teams, in good gesture, offered to loan players to Chapecoense for the next season.
The fellow teams of Chapecoense in Brazil also asked the Brazilian Football Confederation to give it a three-year exemption from relegation – the process through which teams are assigned to a lower classification when their performance is not up to the mark. However, we hope Chapecoense will be able to overcome the tragedy within a short time.
May rest in peace all the dead in this tragic accident!
