RANGPUR: Enhancing capacity of the elected female public representatives in the local government institutions (LGIs) is very important to eradicate gender disparity, accelerate development of women and their empowerment, reports BSS.
The observations came at a divisional level “Learning and sharing of experience workshop” of the Women Development Forums (WDFs) held at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner here yesterday.
The divisional administration organised the workshop under the Upazila Governance Project (UZGP) with financial support of the European Union (EU), Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and UNDP.
Fifty-eight upazila level WDF Presidents (who are also Female Vice-chairmen of upazila parishads) from all 58 upazilas under eight district of Rangpur division and five journalists participated in the workshop.
The main objective of arranging the workshop was to share the learning, experience and successes achieved by WDFs, future action plans and fixing strategies for running activities of WDFs as associate bodies of upazila parishads.
Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Minu Sheel attended the workshop as the chief guest with Divisional Director of the Local Government Mohd Mominur Rahman in the chair.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC-General) Priyosindhu Talukder and ADC (Education and ICT) Ruhul Amin addressed the workshop as special guests moderated by Deputy Director (Local Government) for Rangpur Ms Sultana Pervin.
Mohd Mominur Rahman delivered keynote presentation narrating goals and objectives of the UZGP, successes achieved by WDFs and suggestions for further strengthening activities and enhancing capacities of WDFs.
He also discussed about various steps taken by the present government in flourishing women leadership, successes achieved in socioeconomic and political empowerment and development of the women in the country.
In group works, the participating WDF Presidents indentified various issues and forwarded suggestions for enhancing capacities of the Upazila female Vice-chairmen for women empowerment to attain the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
