Sample to be sent for retests

COCAINE SEIZURE
STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

The investigation officer (IO) of a case, filed in connection with the liquid cocaine haul in a drum of an edible oil container at Chittagong Port, finally collected oil samples from 107 drums of the container yesterday in presence of officials of four government agencies.
The collected samples of oil will be sent for re-tests at the labs of Criminal Investigation Department (CID),  Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR) and Narcotics Control Department.
IO Md Kamaruzzaman, assistant commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP), went to the port yesterday and collected samples from the oil drums in presence of Kusum Dewan, deputy assistant commissioner (DB-CMP), and representatives of the Chittagong Port Authority, Narcotics Control Department and Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate.
On Tuesday, a Chittagong court ordered the four agencies to collect samples from the seized oil drums for re-tests and prepare a seizure list. The court also directed the agencies to assist the IO in his investigation.
Earlier, on July 5, the IO of the case failed to collect the samples due to non- cooperation of the agencies involved. This was due to the alleged tug-of-war between the CMP and the customs authorities at the port over claiming the credit for the cocaine seizure.
Because of this inconvenience, the IO went to the court and informed it that he could not collect samples and prepare a seizure list due to the non-cooperation of the customs authorities and sought directives.
The court, on Tuesday, ordered the IO to collect the sample in presence of class-1 officials of the four agencies. The four agencies were also directed to bring the seized goods to the court jointly, if needed.
When contacted, the IO told The Independent yesterday that he has collected the samples and those will be sent to three labs in Dhaka for further tests. The DB sources also said that they have prepared the seizure list as well.
Being tipped-off by the INTERPOL, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, in the presence of the CMP and Chittagong Port Authority officials, sealed off a container carrying 107 drums of edible oil imported from Bolivia on June 6.
Although primary tests failed to find the trace of cocaine in any of the drums, retests at the labs of Bangladesh Drug Testing Laboratory and Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research found the presence of liquid cocaine in one of the drums on June 27.
