Six to die, 4 get life in two murder cases

Six people have been sentenced to death and four others to life term imprisonment in two separate cases in Narsingdi and Barguna districts, report agencies. 
A Narsingdi court yesterday sentenced six people to death for killing an ice factory worker in the district town in 2008. 
The condemned convicts are Sujon alias Bagha Sujon alias Tiger, 25, of Ramnathpur village in Gauripur upazila of Mymensingh, Sohag alias Sohag Chandra Das, 25, of Kandarpara of Narsingdi, Ershad, 30, of Ammakanda of Matlab upazila in Chandpur, Saddam, 30, Samir alias Samir Chandra Das, 32, and Bimal, 33, of Buakur village in Sadar upazila of Narsingdi.
The court also fined the accused Tk 10,000 each. According to the prosecution, Sujon, one of the six accused, had an altercation with the victim, Ayub, a worker of ‘Kabir Ice Factory’ in the district town, of Boakur village in sadar upazila, as he was sacked from the ice factory following an allegation made by Ayub on August 29, 2008.
Sujon called Ayub out of his house over mobile phone on the same day and took him to a secret place. Later, he along with friends hacked Ayub to death and dumped the body in the Meghna River.  Police recovered the body from the Meghna River near Damervaoura village in Sadar upazila on September 1, 2008.
Later, victim’s father Hakim filed a murder case against the six people. On April 1, 2009, police submitted a chargesheet against the six people to local court following an investigation.
After examining nine witnesses and documents, Judge of Additional District and Session Judge’s court M Shahin Uddin handed down the verdict in absence of the accused.
In Barguna: A court yesterday sentenced four persons to life term imprisonment for killing a neighbour at Betmor village in Pathorghata upazila of the district in 2005. The court also fined them Tk one lakh each.
The convicts are Nurul Islam, 45, Siddiqur Rahman,40, Jahanara Begum, 38, and Jabed Ali, residents of the same area.
