A legal notice has been served asking the government to stop within 24 hours the broadcasting of advertisement on foreign television channels that area running in Bangladesh.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan served the notice to the information secretary, chairman of National Board of Revenue, governor of Bangladesh Bank, Bangladesh Telecommuni-cation Regulatory Commission, managing director of the Nation-wide Media Limited and managing director of Jadoo Broad Band limited asking them to take steps to comply with the notice. Otherwise, the petitioner will move before the higher court seeking remedy over the issue, the lawyer told reporters after sending the notice yesterday.
The notice said broadcasting advertisements on foreign TV channels in Bangladesh is prohibited under the Cable TV Network Operation Act 2006.
The highest punishment under the law is two years imprisonment or Tk 1 lakh fine for violating the cable network rules, it noted. But, many companies are currently airing their advertisements on foreign TV channels violating the laws of the land, the notice said.
